Llew Summers (1947–2019) was a rarity in the art world – a figurative artist in a scene dominated by abstract practices. ‘Llew Summers: Body and Soul’ depicts the work and life of one of New Zealand’s most recognisable sculptors, a man of great warmth and astonishing vitality, whose works are daring, sensual and provocative. John Newton takes us from Summers’ beginnings as a self-taught artist, through his relationships and family life, to his success as a highly visible sculptor with works found in public spaces throughout New Zealand. We follow Summers’ progression as an artist, a true independent, working outside the hierarchies of the art world. His early monumental works in concrete made him a public fixture, with themes of nurture and nature, sexuality and solidity seen in his idealised female forms. As he discovered carving in wood and marble, the work became more subtle and increasingly dynamic. From the early 2000s, following his first trip to Europe, religious imagery entered Summers’ work in ways that extended both his visual and thematic range, and introduced a more overtly spiritual element. His later career features depictions of Christ, angelic winged figures and large, ambitious works in bronze. Illustrated with more than 200 photographs, including newly commissioned images of Summers’ works, ‘Llew Summers: Body and Soul’is a joyful record of a life in sculpture and a testimony to the value of public art.

A modernist take on Mediterranean aesthetics, this new movement in interior design embraces sumptuous minimalism through warm, earthy tones, and natural materials. A welcoming, new, down-to-earth minimalism is gaining momentum in home interiors, from California to Morocco, Portugal to Mexico. This trend combines folkloric influences with a rustic aesthetic, taking cues from arid landscapes to embrace warmth, light, and organic elements. Striking, sun-kissed interiors are replete with greenery to bring the outdoors in, and whitewashed walls are complemented by warm, earthy tones. Detailing like terracotta tiles, rattan furniture, and colorful handwoven textiles are offset by concrete, brick, and glass. The New Mediterranean showcases inspiring residences and apartments that are infused with this relaxed, Mediterranean aesthetic. The book introduces the designers, architects, and brands who are bringing the style to life, outlining key elements in order to show how to create this look at home. More than a design trend, this is a philosophy to transform interiors into havens of light, craftsmanship, and simplicity.

Immerse yourself in the traditions that have defined our cultures and reveal our connection to what make us human. A new generation wants to lead a more meaningful and sustainable life by reconnecting with heritage and traditions. They are looking to the craftsmanship, lifestyle, and unique experiences of the people keeping these practices alive. The New Traditional tells the stories of those devoting their energy, skills, and creativity to crafts such as blacksmithing, distilling spirits, and globe making, and its authors revisit the customs of growing old varieties of apple, beekeeping and producing honey in gardens or on rooftops, and being modern shepherds in Italy or Iceland. They always seek to help preserve cultural traditions and share them with likeminded people.

One day all the screens went dark—and we couldn’t even post about it. We all dream about it: a life free of scrolling, tweeting, liking, faving, streaming, replying, apologizing for not replying, and other assaults on our poor, saturated brains. But what would an analog world actually look like? Chris Colin, author of What to Talk About, paints a picture that's a little Edenic and a little demented. Un-barraged by celeb gossip and political news, we begin to notice nature again. We take walks, stare at the clouds, and listen to podcasts consisting of our own thoughts. Snapchatting gives way to endless rounds of Go Fish. Minecraft is a game involving sticks and leaves. We talk to our neighbors—not about the TV shows we’re streaming—and occasionally we fall in love. Delivered in a pitch-perfect, tongue-in-cheek biblical style, this little book imagines an alternate reality that will hit home in our tech-addled worlds. Rinee Shah’s playful illustrations perfectly capture the absurdity of life reflected in our screens. Whether you’re addicted to tech or not, you’ll see something of yourself when you put down your phone and pick up this smart, funny book.

Humans have been building their homes out of wood for thousands of years. Its tactility and warmth has influenced countless architectural movements, dating back to historic Japanese houses all the way up to the recent craze for cozy Scandinavian interiors. It's one of the world's oldest architectural materials and it just might be the future of how we build. Timber is fast emerging as a sustainable material of choice, and thanks to recent technological advances, it's a safe and sturdy alternative to concrete. This book explores the innovative and inspiring ways architects are using this universal building material. Spanning grand Alpine escapes to tropical getaways, plywood penthouses to mass timber high-rises, Out of the Woods celebrates a material that is both ancient and extremely versatile - and more topical than ever.
