Interest in living off the grid, i.e. self-sufficiently without relying on public services such as the municipal water supply, electricity or local sewage and gas systems, has come on the scene as a greener, cheaper, and more independent way of life. Homes that are off-grid generally allow for a smaller carbon footprint, and a sense of freedom and self-sufficiency. Living Off-Grid sets you free from depending on a company, either using solar panels, wind turbines, a micro water system, or a combination of these technologies. Other times, an Off-Grid system can work as an energy backup or be complemented by the grid when renewable technologies cannot produce all the energy needed. We have gathered different examples of nature-powered homes, which are partially or completely off-grid, to focus on the importance of these homes, which put sustainability first.

One of the greatest and most influential architects of Japan's postwar generation, Shinohara Kazuo (1925-2006) has remained virtually unknown outside the small community of devoted followers. As one of the leaders of architectural movement Metabolism, Shinohara achieved cult-figure stature with sublimely beautiful, purist houses that break away from Japan's postwar suburban architecture. Perhaps the most iconic of Shinohara's works, House of White (1964-66), rearranges a familiar design palette-a square plan, a pointed roof, white walls, and a symbolic heart pillar-to give the almost oceanic spaciousness through abstraction. The underlying formalism in Shinohara's architecture-its basic explorations of geometry and color-lends his work a poetic quality that fuses simplicity and surprise, the ordered and the unexpected. This volume brings together new scholarship from the foremost specialists on Shinohara and Japan's modern architecture. New perspectives and historical frameworks range from the development of the small house as a building type in post-war Japan to Shinohara's engagement with French critical theory. Hitherto unpublished archival drawings and personal travel photographs by Shinohara complement the essays.

The acclaimed “Clown Prince of Crime”, Joker. A character with a physical appearance characterised by a disfigured face, white skin, green dyed hair and red lips. A psychopathic genius, with a sadistic and twisted humour, a lover of weapons to which he always gives a comic touch, his jack-in-the-boxes and cigarette shaped explosives are a classic in his craziest plans with deadly results. Joker has had countless scriptwriters and cartoonists who have shaped his personality and appearance. Much of the fame achieved by this villain comes from the actors who have played him on the big screen. Each actor who has given life to the character has taken a different path, and each of them is remembered by the character’s followers for different reasons. Without a doubt, thanks to them, the character is more popular than ever. Worthy of mention is the voice over in the animated series by the incomparable Mark Hamill, while on television he was brought to life by César Romero (1966-1968), and in the cinema are the performances of Jack Nicholson (1989), Heath Ledger (2008), Jared Leto (2016) and finally the extraordinary Joaquin Phoenix (2019).

The world appears to be divided into cat and dog lovers, but fortunately Walter Chandoha, the 20th century’s greatest pet photographer found himself happily in the middle. He loved these intriguing creatures equally for their unique beauty and individualism, and as subjects to photograph in a career spanning over 70 years. While working on his critically acclaimed TASCHEN book Cats, Chandoha handpicked his favorite dog photos for a potential follow-up title, putting into carefully marked boxes hundreds of contact sheets, prints, and color transparencies, many unseen for at least 50 years, and some totally unseen. Chandoha sadly passed away in 2019 at the age of 98, but his legacy lives on in this dashing sequel dedicated to man’s best friend. “Walter Chandoha’s photographs of dogs are compelling not just because dogs have an inherent charm, but because the person behind the camera was a master of his craft,” writes the photography critic Jean Dykstra in the book’s introduction. We see terriers, collies, beagles, bloodhounds, poodles, small dogs, big dogs, show dogs, working dogs, and many more, featuring over 60 breeds photographed in both black-and-white and glorious Kodachrome. Spanning a 50-year period, the book is divided into six sections, and each chapter reveals Chandoha’s exceptional combination of technique, versatility, and soul. The opening chapter “In the Studio” focuses on formal portraiture; next it’s “Strike a Pose” where our canine companions ham it up for the camera; in “Out and About” they get to roam and play, often photographed with Chandoha’s own children; next it’s “Best in Show” with Chandoha using his reportage skills to capture vintage dog shows from the Mad Men era; in “Tails from the City,” the dogs are hitting the streets of mid-century New York; and in the closing chapter “Country Dogs,” it’s back to nature, the fields, and the beaches. Dogs is an unleashed photographic tribute to these lovable and loyal creatures. The photographer Walter Chandoha (1920–2019) was a combat photographer in the Second World War, before a chance encounter with a cat led him on a path that would shape his professional career. He is regarded as the world’s greatest domestic animal photographer with a career spanning over seven decades and an archive of more than 200,000 photographs. His photographs have appeared on over 300 magazine covers, thousands of advertisements, and were regularly featured in magazines such as Life, Look, and their equivalents around the world.
