Most people live in homes that become dysfunctional when their family circumstances change, whether it is suddenly having to work from home, new mobility challenges, or an unexpected in-law arriving on the scene. It doesn't have to be that way. Houses can be designed to accommodate family needs now and in the future. Interviews with 20 homeowners and their designers illustrate flexible solutions to a variety of living arrangements. Combined with photographs and floor plans, the case studies represent different perspectives, from young families to divorcees, single-parent households, and retirees. Tips at the end of each chapter address issues such as key lifestyle questions to ask before designing a forever house, where not to skimp, and how to plan spaces for double and triple duty. Designing an adaptable home has economic, environmental, and emotional rewards. With smart planning, it's possible to build a house that can be passed on to the next generation.

The M42 Duster was a tracked antiaircraft vehicle developed by Cadillac for the US Army in the early 1950s. The vehicle adapted the Bofors 40 mm AA gun to a modified M41/T41 tank chassis. Although never particularly prolific in the intended air defense role, the Duster did find a niche during the Vietnam War. The M42 was relatively small and agile, and the high rate of fire and loud report from its guns were quite intimidating. These traits, along with simple availability, resulted in the type being pressed into ground combat against infantry and light vehicles, for which it received moderate acclaim. This volume includes over 300 photos of this quirky vehicle. Every nook and cranny of the interior and exterior is shown, along with many fascinating combat photos.

First flown in 1963, the Boeing 727 was skillfully designed to outclass its competitors and remained without a direct rival for nearly two decades. This jetliner was capable of being operated from short, unimproved airfields, while requiring minimal ground service equipment. In flight, it was a dream--fast, efficient, quiet, and comfortable. Although this book is about an airplane, it is as much about the people at Boeing who were undaunted and took the financial risks necessary to build a truly outstanding machine. Readers will learn technical aspects of the 727, along with taking a close look at the brilliant minds and reasoning behind the design through personal interviews and examining archival data. For the hobbyist, a model-building chapter is also included, which covers techniques for both first-time and experienced modelers.

Arizona-based architect Mark Candelaria is recognized for his timeless luxury designs and signature style rooted in classical form and functionality. In Mark Candelaria Homes, the architect presents 12 new projects and pulls back the curtain to share the stories behind them. Each project is accompanied by full-color photographs, floor plans, and sketches. The book brims with design ideas for every taste, from a Spanish colonial-influenced house on axis with views of Arizona's Mummy Mountain, to a reimagined historic English Tudor, to a modernist home inspired by ranch haciendas. Candelaria describes the design process with many personal anecdotes, illustrating that the design of a home should be fun and result not just in a set of plans but a backdrop to living one's best life. An avid traveler and hobbyist chef, Candelaria includes a recipe with each house, many times prepared for or with the client as a grand finale.

Lockheed developed the F-104 Starfighter in the late 1950s. The plane was designed to be an all-weather interceptor. Speed, climb, and altitude all were priorities, and the plane did turn out to be extraordinarily fast, but there were costs associated with that top speed: low-speed handling and landing characteristics were compromised. The plane had a relatively short service life with the US Air Force but remained on duty with several large NATO allies for decades. Particularly when deployed abroad, the Starfighter acquired a reputation for being difficult to fly and compiled an alarming accident rate. Today there are many examples of this pretty aircraft on display in museums, and they have proved unusually prolific as base "gate guards." This is a comprehensive photographic survey of the Starfighter, with dedicated chapters on prototype versions and the A, B, C/D, G, N, Canadian CF-104, Japanese F-104J, and F-104S models.
