Pedro: The Life and Death of Fighter Ace Osgood Villiers Hanbury, DFC and Bar

'I went into the cloud and went flat out for a few minutes, turned, and as I dived out my luck was in and I got him head-on. He went straight into the sea and I am glad to say there were no survivors. A Dornier which had blown up came floating down in bits and another burnt up on land. It was a most spectacular show'. Known as Pedro to his comrades and Tiggy to his family, Osgood Villiers Hanbury was a charismatic Eton schoolboy who, before his untimely death aged 25, became acting squadron leader of 260 Squadron in the Middle East and was awarded the DFC and bar for his bravery. Here, using letters and first person testimony, is his life in the RAF from training school to the Battle of Britain and ultimately to the Middle East. Pedro, with his pipe, moustache, upper-class accent and slightly detached air was the archetypal public-school educated Englishman, but his leadership skills and care for his men commanded respect from all ranks and nationalities. An accomplished letter writer, his lust for life and thirst for action are evident in his missives to family and friends. His dramatic first-hand descriptions of air battles that cost the lives of his comrades are a thrilling testament to the bravery of 602 Squadron, but are counter-balanced by his frustrations of life in the Middle East, the long wait for action and the opportunities for leisure. With the help of Christopher Hanbury, the son he never saw, and Christopher Shores, the acclaimed author, Robin Rhoderick-Jones has written a fine tribute to a naturally gifted pilot whose fearlessness, efficiency and unswerving devotion to both his duty and his loving family were praised by colleagues and superiors alike. Sir Christopher Lee was Pedro's intelligence officer in the Middle East and had kindly agreed to pen a foreword.

Stunned into action by the rapid collapse of his country in 1938, Czech pilot Stanislav Fejfar escaped and travelled through Poland to serve initially with the French Foreign Legion, then as a sous-lieutenant with the French air force in early 1940. After the demise of that country, he fled to England in July 1940 to join the RAF. Posted to 310 Squadron, he saw much feverish action and he rapidly became an ace during the Battle of Britain but was to lose his life on 17 May 1942, shot down over Boulogne flying his beloved Spitfire. Until recently it was not known that throughout his short career, Stanislav kept a full day-by-day diary which has been translated by Henry Prokop and is the basis for this book. Augmented by the diligent research of Norman Franks and Simon Muggleton in unearthing previously unpublished combat reports, letters and other articles of memorabilia, together with their annotated comments, this is an extremely valuable and moving account by a man who gave his life defending freedom. A book which will be sought out by anyone interested in the history of the Battle of Britain. 2010 is the 70th anniversary of that momentous event.

For years, Steve Bond has been interviewing and recording veterans from all sides of the conflict, including air and ground crew. His aim was to transmit their engaging stories faithfully to a wider public. He spoke to British and German, German and Russian, British and Italian, American and German, who all shared the same piece of sky at the same time, in a sense, re-uniting them, sometimes also literally. This is not a book about the rights and wrongs of war, nor the strategies of the military commanders. It is about the experiences and feelings of those in the front line charged with delivery of said strategy. It deals with the sharp end of key campaigns, but also the less 'glamorous' sides of service life - selection, training, aircraft ferrying, etc. This is all original material and the stories of the veterans selected (some of them household names) are not edited but put in context by Bond, with overviews and annotations. The result gives the reader an up close series of snapshots in time, which is always fascinating, often remarkably so, and will stand as a worthy and valuable testament to the airmen themselves. Veterans quoted are from the following groupings: Air Transport Auxiliary, British Army, Civilians, Fleet Air Arm, Italian air force, Luftwaffe, Royal Air Force, Royal Canadian Air Force and Navy, Soviet air force, US Army, US Army Air Force, US Navy et al.

Originally published during the war in 1942, this is the other side of the mirror from the philosophical flight record of authors such as Antoine de Saint Exupery. It is a literal, daily record of an English fighter pilot of 23 years fighting in the Battle of Britain, giving a truly authentic picture of life on a squadron in those times. Gleed details his first sortie in 1939, his break down not so long after, his return to the RAF and battles over France, his exploits in the Battle of Britain, becoming an ace, downing Messerschmitts, and eventually being awarded the DFC for his service as leader and fighter. This is a candid, likable record of a job done which became a classic, now published in paperback. A worthy companion to Spitfire Pilot" also published by Grub Street."

All Arto der Haroutunian’s twelve cookbooks written in the 1980s became classics; it was his belief that the rich culinary tradition of the Middle East is the main source of many of our Western cuisines and his books were intended as an introduction to that tradition.
His Sweets & Desserts of the Middle East is regarded as the seminal work on the subject but it had been out of print for almost thirty years. At last here in a new edition is the Middle Eastern cookbook that everyone wants.
In this book he takes us on a sumptuous and erudite tour of one of the delights of Middle Eastern cuisine. Sweets and desserts occupy a special place in those lands where natutal food resources can sometimes be limited. The people have made supreme the art of creating delights from very little and in doing do have enriched their world with wafer-thin pastries, luscious halvas, crunchy biscuits, exotic fruits and cool refreshing sorbets.
Many Middle Eastern desserts are very sweet (literally soaked in honey or syrup) and yet their variety is infinite. It reflects the multifarious origins and races of the people of the region and combines ancient traditions and modern influences. One basic sweet may have been adapted in a dozen different ways.
Tantalisingly fragrant, sweet and succulent or dry and spiced with the aroma of the East they transport us as if by magic carpet to the exotic lands of the orient. There are recipes for sesame and date baklavas, almond and pistachio coated biscuits, tempting stuffed fruits, rich mousses, delicate sorbets and syrups, jams and preserves, all of which may tempt you to conjure up these Middle Eastern delicacies in your own home.
